Hinchcliffe Finishes 12th At Verizon IndyCar Series Finale

GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma – Sunday, September 18, 2016
Qualified: 20th (1:17.1926  – Round 1)
Finished: 12th
Standings: 13th (416 points)

Having struggled with the No. 5 ARROW Electronics Schmidt Peterson car all weekend, Hinchcliffe started the race 20th.  When the green was shown for the season finale, Hinchcliffe gained five spots on the first lap. He continued to move up the grid and was inside the top-10 when it was time for his first pit stop on lap 15. His crew did a fast and flawless pit stop and once the field had cycled through the first round of stops he was running mid field. The only yellow of the race came out on lap 36 when Will Power suffered a clutch malfunction, which saw his Championship title hopes disappear to team-mate and eventual winner Simon Pagenaud. Hinchcliffe continued to run between 14th and at one point sixth, depending on other drivers pit windows and when the checkered flag was thrown, finished 12th.

“It wasn’t a terrible day but it wasn’t a tremendous day,” said Hinchcliffe. “From where we started, I think coming home twelfth was a reasonable gain but we were certainly hoping for more coming into the day. The Arrow Electronics car was good. We just kind of wavered back and forth about which strategy to use and went with the three-stopper, which might have been the right call. It’s tough to tell until we sit down and look at it.Either way, we brought the car home and the crew was great in the pits. The car was better in the race than it has been all weekend. Like I said, it was not the finish that we wanted but it was still a great season overall. A big thanks to SPM and Arrow Electronics for a great 2016 and we’ll be back stronger than ever next year.”
