Driving With The Stars: How An IndyCar Racer Is Trying To Beat Reality TV At Its Own Game

It’s a strange pop culture moment. James Hinchcliffe is one of the fastest race drivers in the world. At Indy last year, he suffered an accident so serious that it should have killed him.

There was a time—when Steve McQueen got style tips from his co-driver Peter Revson and the Beatles wanted to hang around with Jackie Stewart—this would have been more than enough. But not now. Hinchcliffe realizes that even a guy who drives 240 mph needs to create his own buzz.

His first non-racing claim to fame comes from the creation of Hinchtown, an on-line community that’s adopted the conceit of a locale complete with a local government. Hinch, of course, is the Mayor.
