Press Releases » Solid Top-10 For James Hinchcliffe Today At The ABC Supply 500
Qualified: 6th (two-lap average of 219.463 mph)
Standings: 8th (349 points)
After the race got postponed Sunday due to rain, it went green Monday albeit for one lap with Sato bringing out the first caution flag, allowing Hinchcliffe to move up to fourth. He remained in the top-10 for the next 70 laps, however on the third pit stop, the crew noticed via the NBCSN broadcast that his engine cover was becoming lift on the right side. Hinchcliffe was able to maintain his P7 position until the next scheduled pit stop and then his No. 5 ARROW Electronics pit crew tried to repair with some Bear Bond, but unfortunately this flew off shortly after. The gap in the bodywork then started to cause significant drag and was also causing Hinchcliffe some balance problems as he started slipping back down the field. An early pit stop was made to try rectify this balance issue but then with Pagenauds yellow coming out lap 157, the team was able to properly screw the engine cover back in and Hinchcliffe was able to get back in the race and finish 10th.
“Solid top-10 for the No. 5 ARROW Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports car today. Certainly not the result we were hoping for after qualifying but if you heard the whole story if the race you would understand why we were pretty pleased with that. We had a top-six run going for the entire first half of the race and then we had a piece of bodywork start separating on the engine cover. It was not only creating a drag it was changing the handling of the car pretty quick and we went super lose during the last four laps of that fourth or fifth stint. So we came in and tried to make some repairs the bodywork, but any time you are chucking Bondo onto a car during a pit stop in a race you know things have gone pretty south. But, the guys did a great job to kind of get that fixed and we played some strategy a little bit there to stop early and have a shorter last stop than everyone else when that yellow came out. Like I said not the true pace of the car certainly but from where we were on lap 135 I think we are pretty happy with a top-10. I also need to congratulate my team-mate Mikhail on a great race today and a well deserved second place finish.”
