Newsstand » James on Justin Wilson’s Passing
On August 24th, 2015 IndyCar driver Justin Wilson succumbed to head injuries sustained during a race at the Pocono Raceway. On August 27th Marco Andretti, Joseph Newgarden, Graham Rahal, Will Power and James Hinchcliffe drove their IndyCars across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA in honour of Justin.
As a close friend James had the following comments on Justin’s passing,
“It is incredibly difficult to write down my thoughts about Justin Wilson. I don’t think I’ve totally processed losing him. Justin was one of everyone’s favourite people in the paddock. His smile was infectious and his personality was bright. But what struck me the most about him was his love of racing. One of the pure bloods who loved and respected the history of the sport. Even when this sport was unfair to him, as it was several times, his spirit never wavered. He fought behind the scenes not just to improve his own position in the sport, but to improve motorsport as a whole. No one worked harder and was more deserving of a place on the grid than Justin. He won races at every level, sometimes against far superior equipment. He was always willing to offer advice and help out in any way he could. I looked forward to every conversation I got to have with him. It hurts to think I won’t have another. I was privileged to know him as a racer, a friend and a father. Now, all my adoration and respect for Justin turns to his family; Julia and the girls, Stefan, Keith and Lynne. I will miss Justin dearly and think of him often. Rest well, big man.”
